It’s been difficult to decide which challenges to choose, but for the first one I think I will go with the first challenge, A Picture of You. One of the points about this challenge is that I can be very self conscious at times and don’t like being out of my comfort zone so this is the ideal opportunity to do something completely “un me”.
I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do and even as I thought about it the answer literally was delivered to me by post. I received a piece of junk mail asking me to smile. The junk mail was in the form of the lower half of a face mask with a smile on it. I suppose in line with what we have been covering this academic year I have used the junk to ask the question, “Is this art?” & “Is it a picture of me out of my comfort zone?”
Developing this theme a little further I have decided to do three more images of myself each with minor differences. The subject we have been working on in CATS recently has involved making meanings of images. Are the meanings in the images what the author intended, hopefully these self portraits might explore the idea further.

After the team presentation I decided to re-process this last image to try and blend the mast and myself a little more realistically. I thin the end product is far more effective than the previous one below.

This is the original self portrait with no manipulation.

This image is composed of the original with the right side flipped to cover the left side.

I think for the second challenge I will look at Recycled Rhythm. Not sure how to research this . Looking on the web for ideas and am looking at a tissue paper and comb combo but it seems a little too easy. I am also looking in some craft journals for ideas.
I have come up with a home made instrument that is supposed to capture the sound of water trickling down it. Below are the items needed and the finished article.

The idea is that when you hold it and turn it upside down, Rice inside the tube makes a rushing water sound. I wasn’t completely happy with the finished item because it didn’t sound as good as I imagined it should, but it was a great experience making it.

I have taken week 3 for my next theme which is “Create an inspiring message”. I have taken photos of the various flags around the centre of Hull and created a multi image layer of them on a background of a café in Princes Avenue. I think taken as a whole the flags do give a positive and inspiring message.
These are the original images.

For my final challenge I have taken the theme of week 7 “A view of your city”. Because the blade was going to be in the centre for only a limited time I thought it would be a good idea to capture an image of it. I did a night shoot and took several images shown below.

This is a timed exposure of 4 seconds to allow for the capture of a passing buses light trail. I chose this image because it reflects the stillness of the blade and the limited amount of movement at that time of night.
